Heritage and Culture

The whole area has managed to maintain the traditions and idiosyncrasies of by gone days due to the relatively recent improvements in the communication and access to the area from the major cities around. This has allowed the buildings, cobbled streets, traditional crafts and customs to remain intact to this day and thus achieving heritage status in the majority of the villages.

You will notice a similarity in the architectural elements throughout the area but all the villages have something slightly different to offer like the decorated thresholds in Linares de La Sierra and Alájar, the upper balconies used to dry the ham and charcuterie in Fuenteheridos and Valdelarco, the only rural mosque in Almonaster and the Roman pillars and capitols found in ordinary houses in Aroche. Below you will find a brief description of the villages in our immediate area with links to their web sites if available.

Historical and Cultural Visits

The Posadas in Alájar are ideally situated to visit various towns and cities around the area. Use  Alájar as a base and we can organize guided tours of Sevilla, Mérida, Huelva, Palos  de la Frontera, Moguer, amongst others, where your guide not only to describe  the history and the monuments of the place of your choice but also the tapas  bars! Should you prefer to do things more independently we can taxi you to the  town/city of your choice where you can spend the day to be picked up later returning to spend the night at the Posada.

Closer to home, within the park, Culturaleza is a company designed to guide you around  the towns, villages and archaeological points of interest of the area with various routes. From 4 hours to a full day you can accompany the  Duke of Aracena on a tour of his town taking you back to his era when Aracena was an important market town with links to Rio Tinto and the mines. In Cortegana the guided tour has a medieval theme revolving around the  well restored castle.
